1793 Chain 1 Cent. VF. S-3, B-5, Low R.3. Chain cents, no matter the grade, are always a welcome coin in an auction, be it a Poor example or an elusive About Uncirculated. This attractive specimen happens to lie in the middle of those two ranges, which smooth reddish-brown surfaces and pleasing detail remaining. This particular example, a Sheldon-3, is the most frequently seen of all types and luckily so, as it allows a true collector a chance at ownership. While by no means unattractive for the grade, it is not without its flaws; most noticeably a crescent shaped mark moving from the edge below 9 in the date to the right edge of Liberty´s bust. That said, it does not obscure the portrait and does little to detract from the legibility of the date. This cataloguer feels the need to stress that compared to the typical example, in which a small dissertation could be written about all the existing flaws, this specimen remains noteworthy.
