Four Pence 1865 (5 July) Watermark Large Garter Die Proofs 1867 Paris Exhibition; 4d. die proof in pale vermilion on glazed card, without markings; some marking around the edges and on the reverse. Fine. Cat. £6,500 Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 Note: The card used for these proofs appears to be light sensitive, acting in a similar fashion to photographic paper which has not been fixed sufficiently. Some discolouration around the edges of these proofs is quite normal but it is unusual to find so much marking on the reverse provenance: John O. Griffiths, February 1981
