Labuan 1878 Sago Palm essay, being a pen and ink sketch (80x74mm.) of a 12c. value in red, executed on piece of paper (192x218mm.), with note below "To be reduced to size of British penny postage stamp", followed by "16 cent stamps blue colour as...", "12 cent.. . red...", "6 cent...yellow...", and "2 cent...green..." with Japanese Koban 20s., 45s., 6s. (creased) and 4s. taken as samples of these four colours. An accompanying sheet gives enlarged Malay and Chinese vernacular for these four values and a botanical note about the Sago Palm. Some creases. Photo Estimate £ 4,000-5,000 Note: Labuan joined the U.P.U. on 1 April 1877 and, as a result, stamps were needed since it was one of the requirements upon joining. This suggested design, depicting the sago palm, was drawn by F.W.
