1848-54 Trial Separations Treasury Roulette 1853 (15 Jan.) entire to Burford bearing 1d. red-brown with close to large margins and cancelled by London numeral "6" of Edgeware, the flap bearing the London despatch and open-circle Burford arrival (19.1) along with red wax seal of Vincenti Dabitur; two vertical folding creases barly detract from this attractive and appealing example of this rare trial separation. S.G. Spec. B2a, £22,000 Estimate £ 8,000-10,000 This was an unofficial trial in which the stamps were partly divided by an instrument which made continuous serpentine cuts. These instruments were said to have been used at the Treasury when Mr. Gladstone was Chancellor of the Exchequer, hence the popular name ´Treasury Roulettes´. Apparently more than one instrument was used as different sizes are found, some continuous cuts and some with tiny uncut portions to hold the stamps together before separation.
