1840 One Penny Black Plate IX Covers 1841 (22 May) large wrapper bearing PA-QL block of twenty-four cancelled by black Maltese Cross to very large wrapper from Salisbury to Basingstoke with open-top Salisbury despatch c.d.s. and faint arrival c.d.s. in red alongside, a further strip of four has been excised (originally making up the 2/4d. rate); mixed margins with nine stamps cut into or just cut into, central filing crease and some wrinkling of the cover which is to be expected for a franking of this size on such a heavy letter. An extraordinary and impressive franking with this cover featuring the largest known used multiple of the one penny black on cover. A great rarity of exhibition calibre Estimate £ 80,000-100,000 2/4d. rate would be for a letter weighing 14 ounces. Some arrival noataion on the front indicates that this letter included documents from the Oxford and Blenheim Rail Road For another 2/4d. franked cover bearing a complete row of the 1840 2d. blue from the same correspondence, please see lot 1182
