1840 One Penny Black Plate II Covers 1840 (4 Nov.) cover bearing AK in the deep, intense shade a marginal example from the top of the sheet showing part inscription, "...reful not to rem..." , other margins large to very large ( small nick near K square clear of the design) and well tied by a black Maltese Cross on cover which was re-used to return to the sender and showing a fine strike of boxed "t.p./Erith" at left and with arrival datestamp on reverse (4.11). The original cover, addressed to Erith, bearing a very fine strike of "Portugal St./1d. PAID" which has been partly covered by the adhesive; a beautiful and stunning cover. Any cover re-used is very scarce, but the combination of re-usage and such an outstanding marginal Penny Black makes it very special indeed Estimate £ 1,000-1,500 provenance: ´Maximus´, February 1970 Note: Erith is in east London
