Eadgar (959-75), Halfpenny, 0.53g, circumscription cross type, southern group, Wilton, Boiga, small cross pattée within inner circle, +eadgar rex anglo, rev. +boiga moneta pil., small cross pattée within inner circle (cf. CTCE 20, 212; N.-; S.1140A), well struck, extremely fine, extremely rare, the finest known example of an Eadgar Halfpenny Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 provenance Found near Salisbury, Wilts, September 2011 Recorded with Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2011-0228 Halfpennies known for Eadgar were struck at Winchester and London featuring the mint name in a style used on rare mint signed coins of Alfred. Another small issue seems to have deployed a floral device which in turn harks back to the extraordinary types of Edward the Elder. Until 25 years ago the Eadgar circumscription cross Halfpenny was unknown. A broken example from the Chichester mint then established that these were also struck. This full example is only the second to have been recorded. The style of the coin is typical of the southern group circumscription cross pennies of Eadgar. Boiga was a Wilton moneyer and is known for Eadgar´s circumscription cross and reform small cross issues.
