Archbishops of Canterbury, Aethelheard with Coenwulf as overlord, c.798-800, Penny, 1.36g, Canterbury, ep contraction bar above within inner circle from which extend four cruciform spokes dividing aed / il.h / ear / d ar, rev. tribach of two lines, uncial m, v and a wedge in angles, x+co / env / lf re around (Naismith C22.3 reverse only, obverse not listed but similarities with Naismith C8 reverse; cf. N.233; S.886), small edge split at eleven o´clock, otherwise full coin, very fine, an unlisted reverse for this issue, extremely rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,500 provenance Bt. Spink, 2010 The obverse of this coin with the four cruciform spokes is similar to the reverse of Naismith C8, attributed to Aethelheard alone. This link suggests that this coin may belong to the earliest period of Aethelheard´s joint coinage with Coenwulf of Mercia soon after the ejection of Eadberht Praen in 798. As such this is a new addition to the issues for this phase.
