Lot: 196
Scotland, Fife, Culross, Wester Main Colliery, copper tokens (4), arms of Earl of Dundonald, coronet above, motto below, rev. shield with two crossed coal picks, of Halfcrown size (2, different rev. dies), edge decvs et tvtamen anno regni oct[avo], of Shilling size and Sixpence size, edge grained (DW.42-45), very fine to nearly extremely fine, DW.42 with a few rim knocks; all the known varieties of this issue, a very rare set (4) Estimate £ 200-250 Issued either by the sixth Earl (1725-37) or the eighth (1758-78). The edge inscription on the large tokens indicates an issue date of 1735 or 1767-8. All were almost certainly made at the Tower mint, and the case for issue in George II´s reign is enhanced by the close similarity of the edge to that of the silver regal Halfcrown of 1735, unless the edge collars were still available for use over thirty years later
