James i, second coinage, 1604-19, Spur Ryal, 6.81g, m.m. escallop, king crowned standing facing in galleon holding sword and shield, flag with letter i at bow, rose below, rev. floriate cross over rose on sun burst, leopards and crowns around (cf. Schneider II, 11-13 - this mintmark not in Schneider; N.2080; S.2614), traces of nineteenth century repair to hairline flan crack at three o´clock, minor edge split by letter i in iacobvs, otherwise a good example with a pleasing galleon and bust, good very fine, very rare Estimate £ 20,000-30,000 provenance V.J.E. Ryan, 28-30 June 1950, lot 365 Bt. by Spink from private collection, c.1915 H.M. Montagu, Sotheby, 16-20 November 1897, lot 298 W. Brice, collection bought by Montagu, 1887 This coin is illustrated in the famous Montagu sale which dates the repair to before 1897.
