Kent, Eadberht Praen (796-98), Penny, 1.16g, three line type, Canterbury, Duda, ead./bearht/rex, ht ligate, trefoil before ead and before rex, rev. dvda with various pellets between two lines, uncial m above dividing two trefoils, interlocking geometric pattern below (Naismith C5.2 - this coin illustrated; N.-; cf. S.875), slight edge loss between 6 and 9 o´clock, light surface hairline crack on obverse, very fine, the only recorded example of this type, extremely rare Estimate £ 3,500-4,500 Following the death of Offa in 796, Kent rejected Mercian overlordship and installed Eadberht Praen ´the priest´ as king. His rule lasted for two years before Mercian power was reasserted and he was deposed, mutilated and placed in a monastery. provenance Bt. Spink, 2008 D.
