France, Merovingian, ?Provence, AV Tremissis, 1.34g, c.650, imititative of Byzantine types of late sixth and seventh century, degraded laureate, draped bust right, blundered legend iiitina-xit, rev. vitnitiv thht, letter t in thht inverted, cross potent (Belfort -; ), die occlusions on reverse, very fine, an English find, extremely rare Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 provenance Found at Kingsdown, between Deal and Dover, 2010 Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2011.0166 The obverse legend seems to copy a style of Justinian whilst the reverse is that of the standard Byzantine type reading victoria avgg. This suggests this coin is imitative rather than an issue linked to a mint in usual Merovingian manner. Such imitative coins have been associated with Southern France in the main.
