x Poland, Homage to E A Ziffer on his 75th birthday, bronze plaquette by J Kassin, bust left, rev. inscription in 19 lines, 89mm. x 54mm. (M.441), very fine, scarce Estimate £ 40-60 Emanuel Alois von Ziffer (1833-1913), a Polish Jew, was born in Cieszyn, Bukovina. He founded a large construction company which specialised in the construction of railways. He was ennobled, and used his wealth to promote charitable causes in his native town of Czernowitz, where a monument to him was raised next to the railway station at Dorna Watra. One of his most impressive achievements was the construction of the Mesticanesti tunnel at the cost of two million gold crowns.
