x Italy, Victorio Emanuele II, Opening of the Railway from Genoa to Arona on Lake Maggiore 1855, bronze medal by G Eisel, harbour at Arona with engine and paddle steamer, strada ferrata genova ad arona above, legge 5 giugno 1855 in exergue, rev. legend in eight lines, 55mm. (M.325), good very fine, rare Estimate £ 100-150 The State built railway line from Turin to Alessandria and Genoa (1847-53) was extended to Navara, and from there by a single track line to Arona, completed in 1855. From Arona traffic reached Locarno by paddle steamer (functioning since 1826) and from there to Switzerland via the Gotthard and Lucomagno Alpine passes. The passenger-paddle steamer San Bernardino, built by Escher, Wyss & Co., Zurich, operated on Lake Maggiore from 1855.
