Lot: 470

x George IV, Sixpence, 1821, bbitanniar, laureate bust left, rev. crowned garnished shield, emblems around (ESC 1656; S.3813), extremely fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 600-700 provenance Bt. Spink, 14 March 1957, £5-10-0. The exceptional condition of this example allows the origin of the error in britanniar to be seen clearly. The die setter tried to repair the fault arising from using a broken letter punch for the first B but then compounded the error by striking a new letter b over the second letter r.
