Confederate States, a group of 4 scrip certificates for bonds to the value of $10,000 (3) and $25,000 (1), issued by the National Safe Deposit Co. Ltd., in London, between 1883 and 1886, black, red oval duty stamp, fine to very fine; together with mortgage bond scrip for the Wabash Railroad Co., issued in 1889 (7), generally fine and very fine. (11) Bondholders eager to obtain repayment of Confederate bonds, in default since the surrender in 1865, submitted their bonds to the company to be held by a group of trustees. The legal action of course failed. The deposited bonds found their way to Coutts Bank as successors to the company who honoured these deposit forms and returned bonds to holders. Unclaimed bonds, some 75,000 in all, were sold by Sotheby´s in one lot in 1987. Estimate £ 60-80
