Kindley Collection First Anglo-Afghan War 1838-1842 1838 (19 Nov.) envelope with contents from The Duke of Wellington in London to Sir Gore Ouseley at Hall Barn Park, Beaconsfield, endorsed "free" and signed "Wellington", the letter includes "I hope Herat will not fall. That may save us". (Herat had been besieged by the Persians from 1 Dec. 1837 until 9 Sept. 1838 but news that the siege had been lifted did not reach London for months); fine and rare.
