Francis Chyld & Jo Rogers, goldsmith´s cheque dated 12th October 1688, on hand made paper containing a watermark of a double fleur-de-lis, drawn by the Earl of Aran on the firm of goldsmiths at Temple Bar, London. James Hamilton (1658-1712) was known as the Earl of Aran until July 1698 and became the 4th Duke of Hamilton in 1707. A member of the anti-unionist party, he was famously killed in a duel with Lord Mohun in Hyde Park, London on 15th November 1712. The duel was immortalised by William Thackeray in "The History of Henry Esmond" and the injuries suffered by both men were so horrific that the government banned the use of seconds, replacing the sword with the pistol as the preferred weapon in duels fine with central spike hole and the usual burned edges on Childe cheques, an important historical piece Estimate £ 220-260
