Henry I, Penny, 1.31g, type XIII, Bury St Edmunds, Godric, crowned, draped bust left, sceptre before, henricvs r., rev. +godric[.]on.san:, central star within lozenge with incurved sides, a lis on each corner, trefoil in each angle (Eaglen 11 different dies; N.869; S.1274), exceptional portrait, reverse double struck in places, very rare mint for this issue, almost extremely fine / very fine Estimate £ 1,500-1,800 provenance Found East Anglia c.1985. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC2011-0100. Eaglen recorded forty coins of Henry I for the Bury St. Edmunds mint with only five examples of Type XIII, of which four are by Godric. This coin, not known to Eaglen and possibly from different dies, adds another example taking the total recorded number of this issue for Bury St. Edmunds to six. The mint signature san occurs on a single type XIII coin by Godric which was attributed by Eaglen to Bury St. Edmunds on the grounds that the obverse dies matched other coins with an undeniable Bury signature. It should be noted though that san or sanp is also used at Sandwich where a moneyer also called Godric is known to have operated in the reign of Henry I. It is possible that this coin is from the Sandwich mint rather than Bury St. Edmunds but we have not been able to reach a definitive position on this so have preferred to retain the Bury St. Edmunds attribution. Sandwich is also a very rare mint for Henry I.
