Medals to Sir Edward Stanley Gotch Robinson, Royal Numismatic Society Medal, silver, 58mm., edge engraved ´e. stanley g. robinson 1942´, in case of issue; bronze portrait medal, by Paul Vincze, commemorating Edward Robinson´s 40th year at the British Museum 1912-1952, head right, rev. sic tibi mvsa memor, allegorical female figure representing numismatic studies, 51mm., and Sir Hans Sloane, bi-centennial of the British Musem, 1753-1953, bronze medal also by Paul Vincze, 58mm., both in cases of issue; Oxford University Eight Oar Trial Race, silver medal, 52mm., in case of issue; National Trust, silver medal, edge impressed e.s.g. robinson´, in case of issue; 1914-15 Star (2. Lieut. E.S.G. Robinson. North´n. R.), Victory Medal (2. Lieut. E.S.G.Robinson.), 1953 Coronation Medal, unnamed, in box of issue, and group of three miniature Great War medals, in Spink case, all mint state (11) Estimate £ 200-400 Sir Edward Stanley Gotch Robinson (1887-1976), the noted Classical Numismatist, studied at Christ Church, Oxford, won the Barclay Head prize, 1910, was admitted to the British School at Athens, 1910-11, and joined the department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum in 1912. After service in the Great War, during which he was wounded, he returned to the British Museum. Robinson was appointed Deputy Keeper of the Coins and Medals Department in 1936, Reader in Numismatics at Oxford University in 1938, and Keeper in 1949, a position he held until 1952. In 1955 Oxford University conferred an Honorary Doctorate on him and he continued to advise in the Heberden Coin Room of the Ashmolean Museum, endowing it with his own coin collection in 1964. The E.S.G. Robinson Charitable Trust continues to support students and academics in numerous fields including history, the arts, music, and of course numismatics.
