York, Hiberno-Norse Vikings, early period, 919-25, Penny, 1.19g, St Peter sword type, sciie/tiiio divided by sword right, trefoil above and below, rev. +eriaiitii, voided hammer dividing two trefoils (N.556; S.1015), dark tone, a most pleasing example, almost extremely fine, very rare Estimate £ 2,500-3,500 provenance P Finn, list 7, 1996, no. 80 Examples of this issue with the trefoil either side of the hammer are much rarer than those without, with two examples other than this noted in the SCBI, Merseyside 428 and Copenhagen, 592. This coin is from different dies.
