Mercia, Burgred (852-74), horizontal type, mid phase before 866, Penny, 1.37g, reverse type A, Eanred, diademed bust right, +bvrgred rex, rev. mon/+eanred/eta within closed lunettes, no pellets in corners (N.423; S.938), good very fine, scarce obverse type and moneyer Estimate £ 400-600 provenance Spink Auction 11, 9 October 1980, lot 866 Eanred is a moneyer associated with the earliest of Burgred´s coins and this bust style is thought to have been in use in Mercia before commencement of the joint Wessex and Mercian Lunettes coinage in 866, so can be assigned to the middle phase of Burgred´s coinage from the early 860s. Coins of Burgred from before 866 are very much rarer than coins from the late phase after ´union´ of the lunettes coinage with Wessex in 866.
