Mercia, offa, Penny, 1.41g, heavy coinage, 792-96, London, Eahlmund, offa between two pelleted lines, uncial m above between trefoils, rex below, rev. cross over square, arrow tipped support below, ealhmvnd, letter m an uncial m (Chick -; N.-; S.908), buckled, uncleaned as found, good very fine, a new type for this issue, extremely rare Estimate £ 800-1,000 provenance Found November 2010, Dunmow, Essex Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, EMC 2010.0364 Eahlmund is a well known London moneyer for Offa´s small flan portrait and non portrait coinage (see Chick types 35-50) but is only noted for type 205 (reverse with small Celtic cross) for the heavy coinage with five coins listed for this. The obverse of this coin is the same as this (but different dies) whilst the reverse is quite different using a motif not otherwise found on any of Offa´s coins. This seems to represent either an altar cross or a standard of some kind. This coin adds a further new type to the ever expanding Corpus of types and coins of Offa.
