Ancient Greek, Asia Minor, Pontus, time of Mithradates VI (120-63 BC), AR Tetradrachm, 15.84g, head of young Herakles with the features of Mithradates VI of Pontus clad in lion skin right, rev. Zeus seated left holding eagle and sceptre, ak below arm (cf. De Callatay p.89), good very fine Estimate HK$ 3,000-4,000 Pontus was a kingdom in what is now modern northern Turkey. Mitradates VI, also known as ´the Great´ fought and lost three wars against the Romans but survived to die of natural causes. This coin imitates the Tetradrachms of Alexander the Great which were copied for over two centuries after his death within Asia Minor and the Middle East..
