Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation specimen 400 ticals, Bangkok, 18 - (c.1888-), no serial numbers, red & green, arms top centre, value at centre and at each corner, BANGKOK in margin low centre, reverse red In 1888 the newly opened Siam branch of the HKSB received permission from the Siamese Government to issue notes in local currency of Baht or "Ticals". Accordingly as can be seen in Money in the Bank, the Hong Kong Bank Money Collection, by Joe Cribb, notes were ordered from the Bank´s printer, Barclay & Fry in London, and were placed into circulation during the subsequent year. The present note is 400 Ticals, the highest denomination prepared for Thailand with the exception of the Government trials of a few years later, which rose to the 800 denomination. As can be seen in Money in the Bank, later notes prepared for Bangkok from 1891 bear Chinese characters in the margins. The Chinese characters were added due to the significant Chinese population in Thailand who were extensively involved in trade and commerce. Of the 400 Tical denomination only a tiny handful are known, either in the Bank´s collection or in private hands. (PS 127) perforated CANCELLED, a Barclay & Fry engraving, uncirculated and extremely rare Estimate HK$ 80,000-100,000
