China People´s Republic A Highly Important and Unique Franking of the People´s Republic 1953 (19 Nov.) cloth mail bag sent airmail registered to Sweden bearing, on the reverse, definitive (R2) $10,000, (R4) $100, $500, $3000 (3) and $5000, (R5) $20,000 (3), $100,000 and $200,000 (3), (R6) $200 and $2000 tied by Shanghai c.d.s. with Geneva transit (20.11) alongside; sent by the China National Silk Corporation and shows handstruck "sample" crossed through in red crayon and "Parcel" added, small Par Avion etiquette and Shanghai registration label, handstruck "in transit/via hongkong", boxed "Tullfri 1 Sverige" and Chinese customs circular cachet in red. Some faults as is to be expected from a cloth bag of this nature, including a defect to the $100,000 and one of the $200,000 stamps, nevertheless in a remarkable state of preservation. At a cost of $786,800 this is believed to be the highest franked commercial cover from this period and unique use of a strip of three $200,000. A very important cover worthy of exhibition status. Photo Estimate HK$ 750,000-1,000,000 Note: The high value stamps of (R5) were usually used on bulk mailing receipts, such postal use is very unusual - such a high franking is almost unheard of. The samples in this bag must have been very important - not many organisations could even afford such a large amount of postage.
