Pay order of February 18, 1857, drawn on the Treasurer Lewis Ross, to pay the residue of funds payable by the School Fund for the Female Seminary.Just prior to and during the early part of the Civil War, the Cherokee tribe was riven by disputes between the half breeds and the full bloods regarding the Indians´ position towards the U. S. The half breeds, represented by Treasurer John Ross, Paramount chief Lewis Ross, and W.P. Ross, Board of Education chief. All were slave holders anxious to cultivate the South.
