Auction: 1028 - The "Wilkin" Collection of British West Africa Postal History and British Africa Stamps from the Vestey Collection
Lot: 308
Northern Nigeria West African Frontier Force 1906 (4 Apr.) envelope (with original contents headed " Jemma, 30m W of Bauchi") from Capt. Wilkin to his step-brother in London, bearing 1905 1d. tied by "lokoja northern nigeria" double-ring d.s. for 25th may and showing another clearer strike on reverse. The letter includes "I am now on my way to a place called Bukuru about 70m S.W. of here. I get there on the 8th, I am then off on an expedition against a town called "Kwol" (18 miles W of Bukuru). The Kwol people killed one of the soldiers at Bukuru just lately. After settling Kwol I am to go up to the Rukuba country. There is Tin in that country, but it cannot be worked because of the hostility of the people. I am told it will probably take about three weeks to deal with the Rukuba Country. I have now got 110 men and a maxim here as well as a Subaltern - Gibb of the Scots Fusiliers - who joined me at Bautchi and my Colour-Sergeant". Photo Estimate £ 300-400
