Northern Nigeria West African Frontier Force 1901 (Apr.) envelope (with original enclosure) from W.H. Wilkin to his brother in London, bearing 1900 1d. tied by black manuscript "Akwanaja, 7/4/01" and showing, on reverse, "lokoja/post office" oval d.s. in violet for 12 April and arrival c.d.s.; some small faults and discolouration but still attractive. Rare. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: Captain Walter Harold Wilkin was with the Sherwood Foresters. He joined the WAFF in 1901 as a Lieutenant and took part in the 1901 Yola Expedition and the Bornu Expedition of 1902, both in Northern Nigeria. Before joining the WAFF he was in the Boer War where he was awarded the South African Medal with 4 clasps. He was promoted Captain on 20 July 1905 and was still a Captain in 1914. Rupert Shoolbred was his half-brother but referred to originally as Rupert Wilkin. provenance: T.V. Roberts, April 1989
