Nyasaland 1898 Provisional 1d. "Cheque" Stamp Issue Setting I, Imperforate with Postmaster´s initials or signature 1d. vermilion and grey-blue [2], variety without initials and with centre inverted, unused without gum as issued; small shallow thin at top. An exceptionally rare stamp with only a dozen examples available to collectors. Philatelic Foundation (1966) and B.P.A. (2007) Certificates. S.G. 54b, £27,000. Photo Estimate £ 15,000-18,000 Note: This exceptionally rare variety was first reported in "Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal", October 1901 where it was stated that they believed that the whole top row of one sheet "was struck thus". It is unknown if this strip that was referred to was cut up at that time though two pairs were extant, one in the Royal Philatelic Collection (Positions 11 and 12) and one ex the Hind sale (Positions 14 and 15) though the latter pairs whereabouts remain unknown. The Mosley collection contains a single (Position 1) provenance: Josiah Lilly, Siegel, 1967 Bryan de Robeck, September 1983
