Auction: 1028 - The "Wilkin" Collection of British West Africa Postal History and British Africa Stamps from the Vestey Collection

Naval Mail 1897 (14 Sept.) much travelled envelope, with H.M.S. Alecto imprint on flap, addressed to "Dr. D´Arcy Harvey, H.M.S. Wye, Sierra Leone" with instructions to forward if ship had sailed, the envelope was then forwarded to Portsmouth, Devonport, Plymouth and finally Sheerness, bearing Niger Coast Protectorate 1894 2 1/2d. tied by "bonny river" c.d.s., showing "paid/liverpool/br. packet" c.d.s. (14.10) and very rare framed "Parti./Gone away." (believed to be one of two recorded), both in red with various transit datestamps on face and on reverse. See also lot 320 Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: H.M.S. Alecto was a ship of the British Squadron in West African waters, based at Freetown, Sierra Leone.
