Great Britain 1840 Two Pence Blue Plate 1 JC in light blue shade with good to very large margins in places, neatly cancelled with pale dull red Maltese Cross on 1840 (9 May) unstamped entire letter from Calcutta "p Tory" to London and redirected on 31 October to Haddington, Scotland, originally rated "1/4" and, on reverse, "3/6" (both deleted, the reverse also showing London "ship letter" h.s., London (31.10) and Edinburgh (2.11) c.d.s.; the adhesive with faults though an exceptional cover, being almost certainly the earliest letter from India to bear and Great Britain adhesive.
