Orange Free State 1900 V.R.I Overprints First Printings 1/- orange-yellow, unused with part original gum; traces of creasing and small tone spots, nevertheless a presentable example of this extremely rare stamp which is represented in so few collections. Brandon Certificate (1992). S.G. 110a, £3,500. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: During the short period when members of the public could hand in stamps for overprinting the National bank of South Africa handed in a parcel of stamps to the value of £70 which included some small blocks of the then obsolete 1d. brown and 1/- orange-yellow values. About 50 examples of the 1d. brown and 100 examples of the 1/- orange-yellow were overprinted, together with the rest of the stamps, and returned to the Bank. The matter was referred to Major O´Meara who made efforts to recover the stamps in order to destroy them. Most of the 1d. browns survived though he was quite successful in recovering most of the 1/- stamps. The few that are now known are used examples, mint examples being extremely rare
