Antarctica 1911-14 Australian Antarctic Expedition by Douglas Mawson First Voyage 1911 (21 Dec.) picture postcard of S.Y. Aurora (Wharton MA-1) to Sydney, bearing Tasmania Pictorial 1d. red (traces of foxing) cancelled with a fine strike of the "loose ship´s letter/s.y. aurora/posted at/macquarie island" expedition cachet in blue-black and with Hobart c.d.s. (21.12) at foot; the card with one corner creased. Believed to be one of very few examples of this card known, all of which are used, and possibly the example used as an illustration in the Wharton handbook. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: Mawson had been a member of Shackleton´s expedition in 1907-09 and decided in 1910 to lead his own expedition to the Antarctic. The "Aurora" sailed from London arriving in Hobart in late 1911. The expedition sailed from Hobart on 2 December and a five-man party was established on Macquarie Island to install a wireless relay station. The ship then continued south to Cape Denison where they over-wintered
