Antarctica 1901-03 Swedish South Polar Expedition by Otto Nordenskjöld 1902 (22 Oct.) real photo picture postcard from Ushuaia to Sweden, the picture side showing ship (probably the Antarctic) in the distance and signed by Carl Skottsberg, leader of the 1907-09 Swedish Magellan Expedition, the address panel bearing Argentina 1c. and 5c., both uncancelled, and showing a fine strike of the "s.y. "antarctic"/swedish/expedition" oval-framed cachet in violet together with two different arrival c.d.s. (14.12 and 15.12); fine and rare. Photo Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 Note: The "Antarctic" was crushed in pack ice off Erebus and Terror Gulf, and the crew wintered at Paulet Island in 1903. The failure of the Expedition to return after two winters called for a search party. The Argentinian naval ship "Uruguay", under the command of Julian Irizar, recovered the party from Snow Hill in 1903. See lots 1806-08 for the Rescue Expedition lots
