Hungary Postal History. Being part of the Austrian Empire, these postmarks are of equal interest to Hungarian as well as Austrian Collectors. Although nearly 300 Post Office are recorded at the start of the pre-stamp period in 1751, only a fraction were in existence in the less developed parts of Hungary. The first Hungarian Town postmark recorded is 13th. April 1752 and all 18th. Century markings are scarce. The study of these postmarks is fully covered, thanks to the excellent works by B. Téffi and E. Mueller which were updated by the "Handbook of the Hungarian Pre-Stamp Mail" by Bér, Makki and Surányi in 1990 (whose catalogue numbers are used in the following descriptions). The lotting is in alphabetical order of place names. Whatever the reason for collecting pre-stamp markings, due to the variety of the markings and the changes in their form as well as complicated postal rates, it is important to carefully study the available literature on the subject. This we strongly recommend to our clients Handstamped Markings Adony: 1839 entire with "adony" (4a), Alsokubin: 1846 Official entire with dated "a.kubin" (9a), Arad: 1834 and 1845 entires with "arad" in oval (21d), good to fine Estimate £ 120-150
