x Great Britain 1867-83 High Values Watermark Anchor, White Paper 5/- rose, plate 4, FH cancelled by a neat strike of "doctors commons" c.d.s.; a few slightly short perfs., otherwise a fine example of this unusual and rare postmark. Also 1845 wrapper from Bristol (Penny Post datestamp on reverse) addressed to Doctors Commons. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Doctors Commons, near St. Paul´s Churchyard, was a college for the study and practice of Civil Law. Members of the Doctors´ Commons were those who held degrees either of doctor of civil law at Oxford or doctor of law at Cambridge and who subsequently had been admitted as advocates (similar to admittance to the bar for common lawyers) by the dean of arches, the presiding officer of the Court of Appeal under the authority of the archbishop of Canterbury.
