North Borneo Lahad Datu 1897 (Aug.) envelope to France, bearing 1895 4c. on $1 neatly cancelled by "silam post office/Lion/b.n. borneo" intaglio seal h.s. (Type K1) in blue with light portions of a French d.s. struck in red at centre, Sandakan (20.8) and French transit d.s. (date unclear) on reverse; the envelope a little truncated at left and with crease towards foot though rare and a not unattractive example of this short-lived cancellation. Photo Estimate S$ 2,000-2,500 Note: Lahad Datu was the successor to Silam and gradually took over from that town, the District Officer moving his headquarters to Lahad Datu in December 1895
