Gibraltar "Cosarios" Private Carrier Mail 1856 (14 May) entire letter to Jerez de la Frontera, rated "4" and showing Gibraltar double-arc d.s. in blue, instead of being placed into the Spanish postal system it was handed to the private carrier and showing "pausadelay/compania" h.s. in red. Extremely rare, being the only known cover with both Gibraltar and Private Carrier mail handstamps. Photo Estimate £ 1,200-1,500 Note: A service of Private Carrier Mails operated within the province of Cadiz, each company having it´s own handstamps. Due to their speedy service in the transport of mail and goods they were frequently used, between 1845 and 1860, by different traders from Cadiz, Jerez, Puerto de Santamaria and Sanlucar. Only about eight covers are recorded emanating from Gibraltar that were sent through this Private Carrier mail service provenance: Soller & Llach, 1995
