Sicily, Syracuse (c.415 BC), AR Tetradrachm, 17.32g, charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, with Nike, holding an open wreath, flying above to crown the driver, two dolphins in ex. swimming towards each other, rev. ypakoion, head of Arethusa left, her hair bound by decorated ampyx, four dolphins swimming around (Tudeer 5; Rizzo pl.43, 3; BMC 154 – same dies), an unsigned work of the engraver Sosion - the obverse die links to a coin with his signature and a very similar head on the reverse, perfectly centred on a broad flan, very rare, almost extremely fine Estimate £ 5,000-6,000 provenance: NAC 8, 3 April 1995, lot 161
