Uninscribed coinage, Kentish issues, c.35-30 BC, AV Quarter-Stater, 1.01g, South Thames banded type, blank with bands, rev. horse with mane right, ring within pelleted ring below, annulets by tail and above back (Mack 78 var.; V.158 var; cf. BMC 375; S.44 var.), an unlisted variety, attractive horse, very fine, extremely rare Estimate £ 200-300 provenance Baldwin, 1970 An intriguing and possibly unique coin. The reverse matches BMC 375, which has a small flan and only partially visible reverse design which is listed as a contemporary forgery. This coin though has a full flan and is of good style suggesting it is not a contemporary forgery. Clem Lister notes that he showed this coin to DF Allen who thought at the time that it was possibly a new type Quarter-Stater of the Canti. No matching coin exists in Van Arsdell or BMC (excepting BMC 375).
