Mozambique, Querimba Island, (pre 1926), uniface base metal Tokens (6), initials wpcl (William-Philippi-Companhia-Limitada), base metal token, initials w.p.& c. both sides, most holed for suspension, or with circular punch-marks, generally extremely fine, rare; Ibu Island (early 20th century), uniface aluminium Tokens (5), initials r.o., all slightly different, aluminium Token, with initials sk & b, three holed, generally fine to very fine; Matemo Island (20th century), Portuguese 4-Centavo coins (3), 1919, the first with initials fc, this soldered to a loop, the others holed for suspension, generally fine to very fine (16) Estimate £ 600-700 This is probably the most complete collection of tokens of the Querimba Archipelago offered at auction. It was collected from the old plantation owners personally by the vendor during in the course of three expeditions to the islands. The tokens of Querimba were used as proof of delivery of bags of coconuts and copra at the nearby island of Ibu. Those of Ibu are believed to be issues of private traders and shopkeepers. Those of Matemo are identified as island currency only by their provenance. The sixteen coins come with a typewritten paper giving further details.
