France, bronze medals (5), all by J C Chaplain, Charles Hermite 1892, 69mm., Felix Faure 1897, 72mm., Victor Hugo 1902, 33mm., Université de Paris 1215-1895, 65mm., and La Belle Jardinière, Paris, centenaire 1930, 68mm., all extremely fine, the second in fitted case (5) Estimate £ 200-250 La Belle Jardiniere was a famous clothing store in Paris, founded in 1824 on the Isle de la Cité and removed in 1864 to the Quai de la Mégisserie near the Pont Neuf. The original shop has gone, but the building still exists. The name is taken from the famous painting of the Madonna with Child and St John the Baptist by Raphael in the Louvre, which forms the subject of this medal by Chaplain.
