Catuvellauni, Cunobelin, c.10-20 AD, AE Unit, 2.08g, bearded head left, camvl before, rev. animal to left, cvno below, ring pellet above (Mack 228; V.2131; BMC 1900-1901; cf. S.329), irregular flan, nearly very fine, possibly the best preserved example of this extremely rare type Estimate £ 100-120 provenance Found Colchester, 1975. The two examples of this coin in the BMC are both very corroded. Van Arsdell listed this as a type too poorly preserved to classify. This example remedies this and allows the animal on the reverse to be seen as either a mare or a bitch with a row of teats clearly visible. The style suggests an earlier rather than later date within the 10-43 AD range suggested by van Arsdell.
