Cardinal Pietro Barbo (later Pope Paul II 1464-71), bronze medal, Roman school (Andreas Guacalotti), on the construction of the Palazzo Venezia in Roma 1455, petrvs barbva venetvs cardinalis s marci, bust left, tonsured and wearing cope fastened with morse, rev. has aedes condidit anno christi mcccclv, Cardinal´s arms, 34mm. (Hill 737; Pollard I, 147; VT Bargello 1, 167), brown patina, very fine Estimate £ 80-120 The large Palazzo Venezia in the Piazza San Marco in Rome was commenced in 1455. Medals with the Cardinals arms and also with a view of the Palazzo were excavated from the foundations in 1857. They give us the earliest series of medals made for a living Pope. They are unsigned and have been attributed to Andrea Guacialotti.
