Wessex, Alfred the Great, two line coinage, Halfpenny, 0.48g, Diarwald, cross pattée within inner circle, +el fr ed re, rev. diarp/al mo in two lines, pellet above and below (N.640; S.1068), some edge loss, very fine, very rare Estimate £ 600-700 Round struck Halfpennies from before the issues of Edward I are all very rare. Those struck by Alfred are the earliest examples of the round Halfpenny. SCBI/EMC lists eleven examples with none by the moneyer Diarwald who is recorded for Pennies of this coinage. This may be the only example of a Halfpenny by this this moneyer.
