Nero (54-68 AD), Sestertius, Lugdunum, laureate head left with xi countermark, rev. triumphal arch (BMC 333; RIC 500), crack in flan behind bust, almost very fine reverse good fine, an interesting legionary related coin Estimate £ 200-300 The 11th Legion (undecima claudia) was recruited by Julius Caesar in 58 BC for the invasion of Gaul. At the time of the convulsions in Rome in 68-69 AD following the end of Nero´s rule, it was stationed in Dalmatia. Initially it sided with Otho against Vitellius dispatching a subunit to support him at the battle of Cremona at which Vitellius was the victor. Fortunately the unit arrived too late to participate in the battle so was not punished by Vitellius and merely ordered to return to Dalmatia. It then sided with Vespasian and was with him at the second battle of Cremona when Vitellius was defeated. The 11th legion continued in existence until the early 5th century and was latterly based at Durostorum (Silistra) in modern Bulgaria.
