Captain Alfred Edward Hay Marescaux, R.N., born Edinburgh, 1866; joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet 1879; served in H.M.S. Achilles during the War in Egypt 1882, and was present at the striking of the rebel flag and surrender of the Forts of Marabout and Adjani, 14.7.1882; landed in the boats of the Achilles at the capture of the Aboukir Forts; served with H.M.S. Champion, on the China Station, 1883-1885, and was landed at Foo Chow to protect British interests during the bombardment of that place by the French Fleet; was serving as Lieutenant in H.M.S. Goshawk, when he received the thanks of the Italian Government for his services during and after the wreck of the Utopia, in Gibraltar Bay, March 1891; retired Commander 1909; re-engaged as Acting Captain for service during the Great War, 11.12.1914; employed for Special Transport Duties (C.M.G., M.I.D.); promoted to Captain (Retired) for War Services; died 1942.
