The Important and Exceptionally Rare Hagia Sophia Gold Medal Turkey, Ottoman Empire, Medal for he Reconstruction of the Mosque of Hagia Sophia 1848 (Ayasofya Tamir Medal AH 1266), 44mm, gold, mounted as worn on a gold chain, good very fine, rare Estimate £ 30,000-40,000 The Medal for the Reconstruction of the Mosque of Hagia Sophia commemorates the repair work done on the old Byzantine Church of St. Sophia which was converted to a Mosque by Fatih Sultan Mehmed (the Conqueror) after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The Mosque was extensively restored in 1847-48, giving rise to this commemorative medal. In total approximately 300 medals were struck in total: 2 in gold; 99 in silver; and 199 in bronze.
