Commonwealth Naval Medal 1653, Large Medal for Admirals, 54mm x 51mm, silver, with silver loop suspension, an interesting and attractive 19th Century casting, nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 200-300 The Commonwealth Naval Medal was awarded by Parliament in 1658 to Admirals and Officers for services against the Dutch in the First Anglo-Dutch War, 1652-54. The medal, in gold, was awarded in three sizes, depending on the recipient´s rank- four large medals were awarded, to Admiral Blake, General Monk (later Duke of Albemarle), Vice Admiral Penn, and Rear Admiral Lawson. The obverse features the shields of England, Scotland, and Ireland; the reverse the Action off Beachy Head, 20.2.1653.
